knowing the origin to value small-scale fisheries
Do you know where the fish you eat comes from?
When you go to a restaurant, do you have access to informationtions about when, where and who caught the fish that is on your plate?
By visiting the project´s partner restaurants and choosing the participating dish, consumers encourage and value the work of small-scale fishermen and fisherwomen on the North Coast of São Paulo, in addition to having access to information on where, when and how the fish they will consume was caught, through a QR code.
The project
The Nossa Pesca project started in December 2021 in the North Coast Marine Environmental Protection Area - APAM-LN, in the state of São Paulo, which encompasses the municipalities of São Sebastião, Ilhabela, Caraguatatuba and Ilhabela. Its objectives are to create market incentives for the transparency and sustainability of artisanal fishing and to provide subsidies for improving fisheries management in APAM-LN.

Through the adoption of the traceability system developed by Shellcatch, it is expected that artisanal fishermen and fisherwomen in the region will have access to new markets, add value to their product and the consumer will have access to information about the origin of their fish.

The technology
The technology adopted by the project was developed specifically for the fishing chain by the company Shellcatch. This technology has already been implemented in several countries and includes the installation of equipment (camera and GPS) on participating vessels, recording information about the production of each fishing trip by partner fishermen in a mobile application and a QR tag. code of each batch of fish that arrives at partner restaurants.
